Sew-In Maintenance

Hey yall!
I am still adapting to this blogging thing..
But I am so loving this sew in.. it is saving me so much time .
As promised I will have a vid up soon on youtube on how to moisturize your hair underneath a sew in and how to properly care for your hair once you take it out ..etc. In the mean time if ya are rockin a sew n like my self.

Make sure to :
1. Spray/rub scurl or any other moisturizer on your braids!!
2. Then go over briads again with oil ( I use a lil squirt bottle to make it easier)
3. Wash every 2-3 weeks to get rid of build up ( I dilute the shampoo with water in a cup etc)

If you you are taking out a sew in ALWAYS.ALWAYS.. DETANGLE AND COMB OUT ALL SHEADED HAIR BEFORE YOU APPLY WATER OR WASH YOUR HAIR. or else ya hair will be a matted mess! I can't stress that enough.. I know I experience it!

To avoid this:
1. Part into sections and apply a conditioner and detangle
2.Let conditioner sit on hair for about 2 hrs or so
3. Wash hair in shower to avoid hassel / Straight try not to rub or tanlge the hair too much
4. Be sure to deep condition!! Your hair needs lots of TLC after being hidden for so long!

  1. Hey! I must say ur truly an inspiration!!
ok...i have quite a few questions lol:
    1) Do u always do ur hair urself? as in do u do all ur washes and treatment urself? When do u go to the hairdresser?

    2) When your hair was a bit longer, after washing did you roller set it to dry? and is it best to roller -set?

    3) I thought S-Curl was for maintaining curls. Isn't it?

    4) In between touch-ups, it sometimes gets difficult to comb my hair and if i'm not careful my hair easily breaks. Do u experience this as well? wat do u do during these periods? do u braid it?

    5) Do u deep condition AFTER shampooing?

    6) Is the Doo Gro a good alternative to the Kemi Oyl?

ok..i think thats all for now.
Please reply, i'm in desperate need of advice :)

  2. Great advice! I was so scared to mess with my sewin when I had mine. I don't plan to get another one due to a bad experience with it being taken out, but I will definitely let others know of your tips.

  3. Thnks for your comments ladies.

To answer your questions learning to be strong
Q: Do u always do ur hair urself? as in do u do all ur washes and treatment urself? When do u go to the hairdresser?

A: yes . I only go to the salon to get a relaxer and to do my sew ins other wise I wash myself. O and in diar emergencies Ill go for a wash if I want a style..Other wise.. Do it myself:-)

Q2: When your hair was a bit longer, after washing did you roller set it to dry? and is it best to roller -set?

A2: I would air dry it in a pony tail. 90% of the time I would wear my hair up. I would only blow dry my hair when I wanted to wear it down or if I wanted to style it. I have not yet learned to master a roller set. Soon tho.. Im working on it:-)

Q3: I thought S-Curl was for maintaining curls. Isn't it?

A3:Scurl can be used as a moisturizer. Some use it for curl definition. But as you can see I have no curls in my head-lol I love scurl its a great moisturizing product when used correctly!

Q4) In between touch-ups, it sometimes gets difficult to comb my hair and if i'm not careful my hair easily breaks. Do u experience this as well? wat do u do during these periods? do u braid it?

A4) I usually spray my roots with scurl this makes them much more manageable. A simple bun was my staple air style so new growth wasn't really an issue for me. But it's best to leave your hair alone (wear protective styles, moisturize and seal and bun etc.)as much as possible to avoid breakage and stress on the hair. I would take down my hair in the morning to and at night before bed to moisturize it and seal it with oil and put it right back up.

Q5) Do u deep condition AFTER shampooing?

    A5 Yes always!

Q6) Is the Doo Gro a good alternative to the Kemi Oyl?

Q5) For me, it was not as light as kemi oyl but you never know you may feel differently about it. I have used it when I ran out of kemi oyl tho. it gets the job done as well. I just use a little less.

  4. Thanks Vonnique. ur reeeally helpful :)

i always thought that by air drying relaxed hair ESPECIALLY in a ponytail does serious damage! I thought that to prevent damage you NEED to roller set and dry under a hooded dryer.

So r u telling me that drying like that will have no damaging consequences? does it leave your hair feeling trashy rather than a "smooth" finish?

right now my hair is about shoulder length and i want to cut back on the salon's million dollar bill (lol) by doing my hair myself. i cant really roller set that well so wat do u suggest V?

    thanks for replying

  5. To answer your question as long as your properly moisturize your hair and seal in the moisture with a oil you should have no "damaging consequences" I did it for almost 2 years with no problem. You can pin your hair up instead of putting it in a pony tail. You can air dry in rollers..etc. I am not an stylign expert tho-lol majority of the time i pinned my hair up in a bun and that was it. Check out blackhairmedia.com the discussion baord has lots of styling ideas. Hope this helps:-)
